Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss
This week schools around the country will be reading fun books by Dr. Seuss. My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss is my favorite book. I use it in small group counseling to discuss feelings and do activities where members picture colors in their heads and name a feeling. I also like the tie the book makes to animals, which makes the book appealing to young children. This book was not published until 2 decades after Dr. Seuss died. I am glad it eventually came to pass. It will alwasy be on my bookshelf.

Washington's Birthday
I want to say Happy Birthday to one of our best Presidents. I was disappointed when I talked to our 4th graders, who recently visited Mount Vernon, and only related how they enjoyed the new food court not anything about Washington's admirable traits. Washington was loyal, caring, honest, responsible, and trustworthy. He also has a few traits I wish I had - calm in the face of danger, brave, and courageous. Lets hope our students really did learn and make a positive connection to this wonderful role model (even if they only reported on the food court). I do hope the teachers helped the students make a connection to the character of this great hero.

School Counseling or Principals Week
Virginia School Principals Week had originally been “advertised as the week of Jan. 22-28." Now the governor has officially set aside the week of Feb. 5-11 for the celebration. Schools were told they can recognize their administrators either week. Of course my district decided on this week which happens to be school counseling week. Now our celebration is totally overshadowed by the administrators. I also don't to be thought of as an administrator so I find this very distressing.
